LILONGWE (Maravipost):  National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Elimination Programme (NTLEP) says Leprosy cases has risen from 371 in 2022 to 412 to 2023 due to  knowledge gap among health workers as well as the public at large.

Addressing media conference in Zomba on Thursday,21st December 2023,National TB and Leprosy Assistant  community mobilization and engagement Office, Paul Chiwenkha said overall cases this year is 1412.

Chiwenga explained that stigma and discrimination is still a challenge more especially in the rural areas where most of the cases are registered.

He went on to say that  leprosy patients lack nutritional support and care in their day to day lives.

According to him, the TB rate has declined by 37 percent  as now one case is diagnosed per 10,000 population.

He however said  that the cases have improved with 20 percent and with childhood TB notification declined by 12 percent.

Leprosy was eliminated in 1999 and the disease has been sidelined as it was treated as a skin disease.
