The Malawi Congress Party has been ordered by the High Court to conduct district committee elections across the country within the next 12 months.
The ruling was delivered by Judge Allan Hans Muhome following a case brought by Lovemore Chauwa Phiri. Phiri argued that the terms of office for the party’s district committees had expired and that MCP was required to hold elections.
In his judgment, Muhome said the party must hold the elections in line with its own constitution, which provides for office bearers to be elected at scheduled polls.
Speaking after the ruling, MCP legal adviser George Jivason Kadzipatike said it is standard practice for the party to hold elections every five years to choose new office bearers.
