LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Vice President for the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) Timothy Mtambo has come openly opposed the idea of the party going into a alliance with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Addressing the news conference on Friday, July 25, 2025 in the capital Lilongwe Mtambo argues that the ideologies of the two parties are different.
Further, Mtambo hinted that he could not work with the same party he campaigned against in 2020, “because it has not change.”
“The DPP was voted out of power in 2020 largely because Malawians were tired of issues like electoral rigging, corruption, nepotism, human rights violations, and declining living standards.
“As a party that encouraged Malawians to reject DPP at that time, I find myself asking: what has changed about DPP that should make us go back to the very same people and ask them to trust the same DPP with power again?’
Mtambo says it would be hypocritical of him to simply go back and tell Malawians to vote for DPP.
“Without a clear explanation to our supporters and the Malawian people about what has shifted, I believe it would be insincere to advocate for their trust in the very same leadership that failed them before.
“Given these considerations, I must respectfully convey that I do not agree with the decision to pursue this alliance,” adds the letter.
Mtambo also observes that “picking Jane Ansah, the former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson as DPP Mutharika’s runningmate for September 16, can’t be taken lightly.
“Anshah caused misery, pain to Malawians when they went to street to challenge disputed 2019 elections and despite that DPP and Ansah have not shown remorse to Malawians”.
He declares, “Together with others in the party, will not be part and parcel to campaign for DPP which inflicted on Malawians”.
