Iceland Prime Minister Benedikitsson committed to continue supporting Malawi’s development efforts

Iceland Prime Minister Bjarni Benedikitsson joint press conference with Chakwera

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Iceland Prime Minister Bjarni Benedikitsson has assured of his government committment to continue supporting Malawi’s development efforts.

Speaking during a joint press briefing held with President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday morning, May 23, 2024 at Kamuzu Palace in the Lilongwe, Benedikitsson said Iceland plans to expand the support being provided to Malawi.

The Prime Minister therefore disclosed that his government will extend to a third district in the country.

The Iceland government is mostly focussing its support towards health and education sectors which are key for the development of the country.

Iceland is currently supporting Mangochi and Nkhotakota districts in Malawi.

However Benedikitsson emphasised on the need for accountability to ensure continued success.

He therefore appealed for promotion of resources accountability.

In his remarks, President Chakwera commended the Iceland government for the support but also commended the Prime Minister for honouring his invitation to visit Malawi.

Chakwera said, “I invited the Prime Minister Benedikitsson to show appreciation for the support that the Iceland government is providing to Malawi but also celebrate together the 35 years relationship that the two governments have had”.

Chakwera also said he wanted the Iceland Prime Minister to see for himself the impact of the support that Iceland is providing to Malawi.

Therefore both Malawi and Iceland have agreed to expand Iceland-funded programmes to a third district in the country.

The Prime Minister arrived in the country on Sunday and is expected to leave the country today.
