Illovo Sugar Plc to embark on MK74bn power generation project

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Illovo sugar (Malawi) Plc to embark on power generating for the company’s use as a way of dealing with rampant black outs which has become the order of the day in the country.

Illovo sugar company managing director Lekani Katandula said this during the firm’s investors forum, on Friday, July 16, 2022 in Blantyre whereby the company disclosed after tax profit of MK10 billion in first half of year 2022.

Speaking at the event Katandula stated that the project will be diversification strategy of the company.

He further said that inconsistent supply of electricity by Escom and Egenco has been a biggest challenge for the giant sugar producer, which has negatively affected the operations of the company, hence the coming up of the project.

He was optimistic that the company will be able to produce surplus power which will be sold to Escom.

“To achieve this, the managing director disclosed that the company will set up a photovoltaic (solar) system in Nchalo and they will also invest in coal and biogas to the tune of MK74 billion,” says Katandula.
