LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has declined the government’s offer to purchase a new official vehicle for him.
He reportedly communicated that he has no interest in receiving a taxpayer-funded car at a time when the country is facing economic pressure and rising public concern over government expenditure.
The president has instead opted to continue using his personal vehicle, which he bought in the United States of America during his time in office.
Mutharika is quoted as saying that his decision stems from a desire to “fix this country and save taxpayers’ money,” a statement that has already sparked public debate on the standards expected from national leaders.
His stance has been praised by some Malawians who view the move as an example of modest leadership and fiscal responsibility in a period when government resources are severely strained.
Others, however, have framed the development as a challenge to the current administration, questioning whether former President Lazarus Chakwera would make a similar personal sacrifice by refusing state-funded luxuries.
In local communities and online platforms, the question “Kodi Chakwera anakachita zomwezi?” has grown louder as people draw comparisons between the two leaders and their attitudes toward public resources.
