Irish Prime Minister Varadkar re-registers as doctor to assist in fighting against COVID-19

DUBLIN-(MaraviPost)-Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar who was a practising doctor for seven years before joining politics has re-registered as a doctor with the country’s health service to help in fighting against COVID-19 pandemic.

Varadkar confirmed about the development adding that he will be working one shift a week to assist during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Prime Minister had worked as a junior doctor in St James’s Hospital and Connolly Hospital in Dublin and left the medical profession in 2013, a year before he was appointed minister for health.

His move follows an appeal by the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) for ex-health workers who had left the profession to register for work during the pandemic.

Born to an Indian doctor and an Irish nurse with his partner, two sisters and their husbands all also working in healthcare, Varadkar through his spokesperson disclosed to Sky News that he is very happy to help out his family and friends are working in the health service in smallest way possible despite having other duties.

In the Republic of Ireland, the deaths of a further 21 patients who had Covid-19 were confirmed on Sunday, bringing the total death toll there to 158.
