MCHINJI-(MaraviPost)-Irritated St Peters Catholic church angry members under Namitete parish, Mchinji district on Sunday, November 1, 2020 demonstrated against Parish Priest Father Chivalenji demanding his removal.

The development follows poor leadership the parish priest has been showing to his members.

One of the demonstrators who opted for anonymity told The Maravi post that church members wrote a petition to the parish council and a go ahead was given to demonstrate peacefully but in the process the demonstrations turned into violence as the members were very angry.

He highlighted closure of religious community gatherings, improper disciplinary procedures and misuse of offerings as some of the reasons why they do not want the priest anymore.

“They closed some of the catholic community gatherings (mphakati) such as Malenya, Mafuta and Msampha due to their failure to fulfill the financial target they were told.

“As congregates, we make pledges to the church whereby we promise to offer our first harvests, but due to other reasons like inadequate harvests when we fail to fulfill the target, the priest sends us back and we are not allowed to take part in other things such as baptizing our children” he said.

He added, “In a petition that we have seen, the angry members also said that all Christians under community gathering (Mphakati) get punished when the leader of that particular gathering commits a crime which they find it being so unfair.

In a video circulating on WhatsApp, the demonstrators destructed the church chairs (benches).

Efforts to get Fr. Chivalenji comments on the matter proved futile as he could not be reached.
