LILONGWE, Malawi, May 2 (MaraviPost) Malawi Congress Party (MCP)’ Member of Parliament (MP) for Salima North West, Dr Jessie Kabwira has bid farewell with the constituents to this years’ parliament budget session by launching the MK2 million football bonanza.
The bonanza which will run till June this year has attracted 16 constituency’s teams expected to battle out for the grand prize worthy MK400,000,00 with a cup, balls and jerseys.
Speaking in an interview with Maravi Post after the launch at Nakaledza Primary School ground on Saturday at Traditional Authority in the constituency, MP Kabwira said it was worth noting to bid farewell to her constituents with the bonanza as the way of making young people busy which would deter them indulging unruly behaviours.
She said the tournament would also be a fishing ground for identification of talented footballers needed for Malawi’s major supper league teams as she has engaged central region football league administrators for scouting skilled and talented players.
“It was necessary to consult and meet constituents before going to Parliament seating with their concerns and needs required for support which includes looming hunger due to dry spell, flood and hailstorms which hit hard the area. People need portable, health facilities and school blocks.
“While waiting for their needs’ response, it was necessary to make young people busy with the bonanza as they constitute large number of the area. This will give opportunity to major super leagues teams to scout some talented players who are to beef up their teams for just kick started the TNM top flight leagues.
“After the bonanza, I will launch a major tournament for both netballers and footballers which at the end wanting to have two teams; Kabwira Football and Netball Team Select expected to compete in major flight leagues in Malawi and beyond”, discloses Dr Kambira.
Zakaliya Kasakula, former Central Region Football League executive member applauded the legislator for the timely gesture of introducing the bonanza saying newly promoted supper league teams would be a scouting ground for players.
“There is much talent here needed for supper league materials (players). This is one of the initiative the nation needs to embrace for the development of the country’s soccer which still remains populous sporting activity”, said Kasakula, who spiced up the bonanza launch with exciting commentary.
Mafumu FC was the winner of the bonanza’s third quarter round after beating Ndevu FC in penalties shoot out as they walk out with two balls, jersey and cash.
