Joyce Banda promises bold economic reforms if elected

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-The road to the September 16 elections took a dynamic turn as thousands of supporters gathered on June 5, 2025, at Nakapa Community Ground in the southern part of Mangochi District.

The large crowd came to listen to former President and People’s Party leader, Dr. Joyce Banda, as she outlined her vision for Malawi’s development.

Dr. Banda did not mince words as she criticized the current economic direction of the country under President Lazarus Chakwera.

She lamented that while neighboring countries are registering economic growth rates of 5 percent or more, Malawi continues to sink deeper into poverty.

According to Dr. Banda, this worrying trend is a clear sign of leadership and policy failure at the national level.

She said this economic reality has pushed her to introduce comprehensive poverty-alleviation programs in her party’s 2025 manifesto.

Among the bold reforms she pledged was the provision of affordable fertilizer to farmers across the country.

She emphasized the need to support irrigation farming and commercial crop production to ensure food security and increase exports.

Dr. Banda also revealed an ambitious plan to send 100,000 Malawian youths abroad to take up various employment opportunities in foreign countries.

She described this strategy as both a solution to youth unemployment and a way of boosting Malawi’s foreign remittance inflows.

The People’s Party leader expressed confidence that once elected into office on September 16, her administration would prioritize inclusive development.

Her message resonated strongly with the Mangochi crowd, many of whom cheered her pledges and expressed hope for real change.

Dr. Banda’s campaign has positioned her as a serious contender in the 2025 elections, drawing large crowds and reviving conversations around economic justice, youth empowerment, and agricultural transformation.

As the country inches closer to the polls, her promises are likely to influence national debates and voter expectations.

The Mangochi rally highlighted her ongoing appeal among grassroots communities, especially in rural Malawi where economic hardship continues to bite.

Whether her proposals will translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Joyce Banda has reignited a sense of urgency in Malawi’s political conversation.
