Former President Joyce Banda continues to deny involvement in the massive looting of funds during her administration despite being implicated by more than one convicted person in her administration.
Convicted Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture claimed that Banda who remains outside Malawi, in fear of her life, instructed officials in Ministries as well as Cabinet Ministers to siphon money so that she could use the funds in the presidential campaign in 2014, a poll she miserably lost.
Senzani who is serving a 3 year jail term says that Banda’s directive was highly respected because she (Banda) was the sitting President then.
The former President Joyce Banda however released on Sunday statement denying these accusations as false and once again pointed the finger at the current government as being behind these fresh accusations.
The former President Joyce Banda says that Senzani is being pressured by the Peter Mutharika government to implicate her, dubbing the claims by the jailed Principal Secretary as ‘baseless’.
While saying that she is being implicated because government wants her image to be tarnished, Joyce Banda admits that it was not surprising that Senzani made the claims on her.
The Malawi former President Joyce Banda was also implicated by jailed businessman, Oswald Lutepo and Leonard Kalonga. Oswald Lutepo took his accusation to the public on radio and many in Malawi did find him credible.
The Malawi former President Banda however risks to be investigated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), as the graft busting body has hinted that it will go ahead to probe anyone implicated in the scandal.
Joyce Banda has branded the move by government to implicate her as ‘witch-hunting’. However her self-imposed exile from Malawi is not winning her any sympathy at home. Many observers believe she has something to hide that is why she has failed to set foot in Malawi for over a year.
