BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-UTM party President Dalitso Kabambe has accused President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of failing to deliver on key promises made during the 2019 elections describing the current administration as untrustworthy and misleading.
In an interview with Maravi Post, Kabambe reminded Malawians that while UTM had promised to create one million jobs, MCP under Chakwera pledged four million jobs,a commitment that has not been met.
“They said our promise of one million jobs was unrealistic. But between one million and four million jobs, who was truly being unrealistic?.How many jobs have they created?” Kabambe questioned.
The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM ) Governor also criticized the government for failing to implement its 2019 promise of providing fertilizer at K25,000 under a universal subsidy program, which was meant to benefit all farmers across the country.
Instead, Kabambe argued, the administration borrowed UTM’s targeted subsidy approach of selling fertilizer at K4,495 during the first year of the Tonse Alliance government when late Saulos Chilima was in cabinet.
He said even that model was abandoned due to mismanagement.
Kabambe further accused the current government of running the economy without seriousness alleging that it has been mishandled by individuals he mockingly referred to as ‘pastors and their relatives’.
“We trusted the economy with pastors, their sons, their in-laws all pastors. Now the economy has been ‘pastoralized,’ and everyone is crying in poverty,” he said.
The economist urged Malawians not to hand over government again to leaders who lack the skills and integrity to manage the economy, stressing that Chakwera cannot be trusted after abandoning his own promises.
“It is really sad that a pastor can disown his own promises. Nobody forced them to adopt the UTM manifesto in 2020 they had the option to stick with their Hi-5 agenda.
“This shows that they are untrustworthy. Don’t trust him, not even with a bottle of brandy,” said Kabambe.
Calling for change in the 2025 elections, the UTM leader urged Malawians to reflect on past experiences and demand accountability from leaders.
“We have been deceived for too long. There has been no real transformation. The Singapore they promised has not come. Let us vote for change.
“Let us vote for Dr. Kabambe the only leader who will stand by his word and account for every promise made,” he said.
Kabambe concluded by urging citizens to make the right choice in 2025 to avoid repeating mistakes that according to him have left the country stuck in poverty and economic hardship.
