UTM leader urges peaceful transfer of power while demanding inquiry into Chilima’s tragic death
In a dramatic turn after one of Malawi’s most fiercely contested elections, UTM president Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has bowed out gracefully, conceding defeat and congratulating Professor Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on their victory.
Kabambe’s statement, released late last night, struck a rare tone of humility and statesmanship, urging Malawians to respect the will of the people and embrace peace in the aftermath of the vote.
In a press release, Dr. Kabambe extended his sincere congratulations to Professor Peter Mutharika and the DPP for their electoral victory.
He said the democratic process has spoken and that the will of the Malawian people must be respected and upheld.
Dr. Kabambe emphasized that a peaceful transfer of power will be a testament to the maturity of Malawi’s democracy and the resilience of the nation.
As Malawi moves forward, he urged all stakeholders, supporters, and citizens to remain committed to peace, unity, and the collective development of the country.
In the same statement, Dr. Kabambe also called for an independent inquiry into the tragic death of the late Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Chilima.

He stressed that Dr. Chilima’s passing remains a matter of deep national concern.
According to Dr. Kabambe, addressing this tragedy with transparency and urgency will help bring closure to the nation and reaffirm Malawi’s collective commitment to justice and accountability.
He further stated that electoral victories are a mandate for service, not retribution.
Dr. Kabambe called on President Mutharika’s leadership to prioritize inclusive governance, healing divisions, and rebuilding Malawi’s struggling economy.
He observed that Malawi needs everyone working together regardless of political differences in order to foster stability and prosperity.
Once again, he congratulated Professor Mutharika on his election.
He expressed hope that under Mutharika’s leadership, Malawi will continue on the path of progress and unity.
The press release was signed, “Yours faithfully, Dr. Dalitso Kabambe.”
Analytical Conclusion
Kabambe’s concession marks an important moment of statesmanship in Malawi’s fragile political environment.
By accepting the outcome and appealing for unity, he has helped to reduce tensions that might otherwise have escalated into unrest.
His recognition of Mutharika’s victory signals to UTM supporters that the democratic process must be respected, thereby reinforcing the credibility of the electoral system.
At the same time, his call for an inquiry into Chilima’s death ensures that demands for justice remain central to the national agenda.
Taken together, Kabambe’s message provides a stabilizing effect, balancing acceptance of results with a firm commitment to accountability, and sets the tone for a more peaceful and cooperative post-election period.
