Kamuzu Central Hospital bailed out with medical supplies in the face of Covid-19

The Children’s ward at Kamuzu Central Hospital

Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—Health care workers at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) are all smiles, thanks to the donation of medical equipment at the facility by a local organization, Global Hope Mobilisation (Glohomo).

The donation which is worth K75 million includes medical supplies such as hand washing materials, personal protective equipment as well as a theatre room to help special support patients.

Speaking during the donation, Executive Director for the organisation, Caleb Thole, said the dream of the organisation was to save lives of Malawians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Recently, the President called for support from different partners to come in and we believe that even though Covid-19 will be over, but the facility will still help Malawian women in responding to issues to do with maternal health,” said Thole.

In her acknowledgement, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Priscilla Phiri Mwanza, said the support came at the right moment when the hospital was overwhelmed with the pandemic.

Mwanza explained: “We are very delighted for receiving this donation from Glohomo. It comes at the right moment when Covid-19 cases are rising. So far, before now, we were using a makeshift theatre within the hospital but it was very challenging; it’s very far from the ward and we always had to move a patient from here to that side inside.

“As we are all aware, Covid is a highly infectious disease and we are not supposed to be mixing these two groups: infectious and noninfectious people. So, having a special theatre for Covid will go a long way to prevent infections in non infected people.” The donation was made possible with support from Swiss Agency for Development and Corporation and Education Trust Africa.
