Kanyenda urges Wanderers to address player payment dispute

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Former Mighty Wanderers striker and ex-Malawi national team captain, Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda, has called on the club’s leadership to urgently address allegations that players were underpaid following a recent friendly match against Silver Strikers.

According to a report that MaraviPost obtained, the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) which sponsored the match, provided funds to ensure each player from both teams received MK100,000 as an appearance fee.

However, it is alleged that Mighty Wanderers players only received MK50,000 each, while Silver Strikers counterparts were paid the full MK100,000.

Sources close to the matter claim that the payment discrepancy has left some Wanderers players frustrated and questioning the transparency of the club’s financial handling.

Kanyenda, known for his outspoken stance on football governance, warned that leaving the issue unresolved could damage the team’s morale and tarnish the club’s reputation.

He emphasized that such incidents risk encouraging dishonest practices in future league games and cup competitions.

“This is about integrity and trust. If players feel they are not being treated fairly, it affects their performance and commitment on the pitch. The management must come out clearly and explain what happened to the funds,” said Kanyenda.

Mighty Wanderers officials have not issued any statement to confirm or deny the allegations.
