The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) under the Karonga diocese has embarked on a K 25 Million worth project to enhance the capacity of people from the area of Traditional Authority(T/A) Kyungu and Kilupula in Karonga.

Introducing the project to the District Executive Committee (DEC) on Tuesday, the Project Coordinator for the diocese Louis Nkhata said this will make the community from the two TAs to participate  in development projects such as Local Development Fund ( LDF).

He said lack of community participation in the development projects is resulting into the abuse of resources by the project implementers.

“The project intends to build capacity of communities so that they are able to hold duty bearers accountable,” said Nkhata.

“Through research, we have found that most of the development projects in the two areas stall because of lack of transparency and accountability, a thing which lead to the misuse of resources,” he added.

Apart from Karonga, the projects will also be implemented in Dowa and Dowa districts.

Reacting to the development, Traditional Authority Kilipula commended CCJP for including his area saying “it will be an eye opener.”

The project which is being funded by the Tilitonse through OXFAM Malawi will run for one year and it is expected to phase out in April 2016.
