Karonga men on rampage with rice proceeds—one dies A 37 years old man in Karonga, the northern district of Malawi, has lost his life after drinking local alcohol excessively without taking food.According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Mbina Mwamulima from group village headman Mlinda in the area of Traditional Authority Kilipula in the district.

It is reported that the deceased was taking local alcohol for almost some days without eating.

The wife of the deceased also confirmed to Maravipost that she did her best to save the life of her loving husband but her efforts proved futile.

“He has been taking alcohol for almost a week without food. I tried to give him some food but it didn’t work and after taking his body to the hospital, we were told that he is already dead,” said the wife.

She said the deceased have left five children who are still doing their education and has appealed for assistance from well wishers.

Usually, men in the district especially in north including the youths use to take beer during this time of rice harvesting as they have enough cash.

A lot of marriages are also affected during this time as men start ignoring or respecting their wives.

Meanwhile, the police have asked residents especially men to drink beer responsibly.

Some traditional leaders have also appealed to their subjects to stop over selling their rice harvest because of the hunger situation.

It is estimated that the district will harvest a lot of rice this year because of the floods that hit most of the areas.

Currently, a 50Kg of rice is sold at K27, 000 and is expected to rise anytime next month due to the high demand.
