Landlords and Tenants Association (LATAK) in Kenya has ordered all tenants not to pay their rents until further notice amid Covid-19 Pandemic.

The association’s Secretary-General, Ben Liyai confirmed about the development.

Liyai disclosed that the development has come in following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s orders on operations of businesses which affected most people in the country.

Report by Nairobi News has revealed that the association has ordered all landlords that there must be no evictions, harassment, and disconnection of electricity and water to tenants until businesses resume to normal operations.

On April 1, 2020, the association ordered its members to waive rent for the next three months to cushion Kenyans from the adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic. On April 5 the association also revealed a short code (20777), which landlords and tenants could text with the word “Landlords” or “Tenants” to seek intervention in case of no compliance to the set directives.

In addition, the association has also asked the government to order a 6-month moratorium on bank loans currently being serviced by landlords.
