Kieran Ngwenya switches allegiance to Trinidad & Tobago, ends Malawi Flames career

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Former Flames defender Kieran Ngwenya has officially switched international allegiance to Trinidad & Tobago, bringing his Malawi career to an end after going several years without a national team call-up.

The Scottish Premiership fullback, who plies his trade with Dunfermline Athletic, last featured for Malawi in 2024.

Since then he has been overlooked by successive Flames coaches, with one notable omission under former head coach Mario Marinica reportedly linked to concerns over playing style and tactical fit.

Ngwenya is said to have been dropped after being deemed not to suit the system Marinica wanted at the time.

Despite his absence from the Flames setup, Ngwenya has continued to gain valuable experience at club level in Scotland.

The left-back has been a regular for Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Championship and was part of the squad that reached the final of the Scottish Cup last season where they lost 3-1 to Celtic at Hampden Park. That appearance gave him exposure on one of British football’s biggest stages.

Born in Scotland to a Trinidadian father and Malawian mother, Ngwenya was eligible to represent all three nations.

He chose Malawi earlier in his career and earned caps for the Flames, but the lack of consistent selection prompted him to reconsider his international future.

With Trinidad & Tobago now securing his switch, the 23-year-old will add depth to the Soca Warriors’ defensive options as they prepare for upcoming CONCACAF assignments.

For Malawi, Ngwenya’s departure is a loss given his age, pace, and experience in European football.

The Flames have struggled at left-back in recent years, and Ngwenya’s presence could have strengthened that area.

Football Association of Malawi officials have not yet commented on the switch, but the development highlights the challenge of retaining dual-eligible players when regular game time is not guaranteed.

Ngwenya’s decision closes one chapter and opens another, as he now turns his focus to helping Trinidad & Tobago compete on the international stage while continuing his club career with Dunfermline.
