Labour minister urges employers to promote decent work environment

By Jones Gadama

Malawi’s Minister of Labour, Peter Dimba, has emphasized the importance of promoting a conducive working environment by respecting labour laws, which contributes to sustainable economic development.

Speaking at a meeting on the promotion of decent work and compliance to labour rights and laws at Riverside Hotel in Lilongwe, Dimba highlighted the significance of adhering to labour laws.

The Ministry of Labour has dedicated the month of May to promoting decent work and labour rights, following President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s call during the 2024 Labour Day commemoration in Balaka.

The President stressed the need for employers to respect labour rights laws, which are often breached in various workplaces.

Dimba urged employers to ensure that workers are in good working conditions, with safe working environments. He also encouraged workers to seek help when their labour rights are violated.

The Minister’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ freedoms, including their right to organize and work in a safe environment.

The Zantchito Skills for Job Programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, aims to create an enabling environment for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and strengthen labour laws for decent jobs and sustainable economic development.

This initiative demonstrates the government’s efforts to promote economic growth while protecting workers’ rights.

The Heart Festival and similar initiatives underscore the importance of cultural exchange, education, and tourism promotion in fostering national unity and economic growth.

As Malawi continues to develop its labour laws and policies, it is essential for employers, workers, and the government to work together to create a conducive work environment that promotes economic development and protects workers’ rights.
