LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Lilongwe City Council (LCC) on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 elected new Mayor Esther Sagawa, the Councillor for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Chimutu Ward.

She replaces Richard Banda, whose two-and-a-half-year tenure has come to an end.

Sagawa, formerly the deputy mayor, won by amassing 21 votes, defeating councillor Felix Tsokonombwe, who received nine votes during the election held at Civic Offices in City Centre, Lilongwe.

Ruth Chngwalu, representing Mtandile Ward, is the deputy mayor. Chingwalu got 16 votes beating the councillor for Tsabango 1 Ward William Nguluwe who received 11 votes.

Last week, four mayors and their deputies, represented by Ritz Attorneys at Law, filed an application to delay mayoral elections.

However, the High Court of Malawi in Blantyre on Monday, June 24, 2024, lifted the order that previously prevented city and municipal councils from holding elections to elect mayors and deputy mayors.

The court’s decision allows the electoral process to proceed pending a judicial review.
