LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Lilongwe City Mayor Alex Banda was on Saturday, 18 April 2026, involved in an embarrassing incident at Bingu National Stadium during the medal presentation ceremony of the NBS Bank Charity Shield.
The event followed a closely contested match in which Mighty Wanderers FC secured a 1–0 victory over rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC.
Eyewitnesses reported that Mayor Banda attempted to approach the podium during the medal presentation but was stopped by security personnel.
He was subsequently escorted away from the stage, allegedly because he was not dressed in the officially designated attire required for dignitaries participating in the ceremony.
During the incident, Banda was heard questioning the actions of the security officers, saying, “Why are you doing this to me when the event is happening in my city?”
Despite this, security officials insisted that he step away and prevented him from accessing the podium.
The unexpected scene drew attention from spectators and officials alike, briefly disrupting the otherwise celebratory atmosphere following Wanderers’ victory.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official statement from event organizers or the Lilongwe City Council regarding the incident.
