LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As one way of curbing money fraud,Malawi Communication Regulations Authorities (MACRA) is to embark on registering mobile phones for every individual country wide.
MACRA Director General, Daudi Suleiman disclosed this on Monday, January 31, 2022 in a meeting with parliamentary committee on Public Accounts (PAC).
Suleiman said Simcards registration is expected to commence in the middle of this year
He said in absence of the handsets defrauders are able to switch on different Simcards to one handsets managing to duped poor Malawians .
MACRA boss said with the handsets registration the authority will be automatically block the handsets once lost or Simcard changed.
Suleiman said the fraud malpractice has affected a lot of Malawians and the authority has received a lot of calls to work out on the matter.
“This malpractice is highly practiced in Zomba and Chichiri prisons as in mates use different Simcards to steal from people without properly being traced,” said Suleiman.
In his remarks, Chairperson for the Committee ,Shadrek Namalomba said the committee welcomes the idea as it will arrest the fraud that is happening in the country.
Namalomba said the defrauders target phones as they use to throw away the Simcards making it hard for the security companies to detect the defrauders.
Meanwhile the countries citizen are still duped by the defrauders due to the absence of phone registration.
