The Football Fans were travelling from Lilongwe to Blantyre to watch the Blantyre derby between Mighty Be-forward Wanderers and Big Bullets at the Kamuzu stadium.
According Balaka police publicist sub inspector Josephy Sauka, two of the dead have been identified as Balaka Town Council employee who was working at Balaka Stadium and a Balaka Assemblies of God Pastor.
“I can confirm that 3 people died on the spot while the other one died on his way to Zomba Central Hospital,” Sauka said.
Sauka said 13 others were seriously injured and that seven of those injured were referred to Balaka district hospital while the other five were rushed to Zomba Central Hospital.
But according to an eye witness Song Namagowa, the accident happened when a Blantyre-bound Nissan Caravan registration number CZ 5835 and a Hotel Victoria Toyota Hiace minibus registration number BS 167 collided at Chitale in the district along Blantyre-Zalewa road.
“The tyre of the white bus belonging to Vitoria hotel burst and later collided with the black one.” said Namagowa adding that both buses were over speeding.
Reports gathered by MBC indicates that Blantyre bound bus left Lilongwe at around 8am Bullets FC supporters.
Meanwhile, police have disclosed that the cause of the accident is yet to be known
