Malawi and China have signed a financing agreement for the construction of a modern Judicial Complex in Lilongwe.
Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Simplex Chithyola-Banda signed the agreement on behalf of the Malawi government, describing it as a fitting gift from the Chinese government to the people of Malawi.
The grant financing, worth Chinese RMB 200 million, will aid in transforming Malawi’s infrastructure.
The Judicial Complex, to be constructed opposite the Parliament Building in Lilongwe, will house various offices, including courtrooms, marking a positive development for the country’s judicial system.
The project is expected to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country, with several Malawians anticipated to benefit from employment opportunities and supplying goods and services.
Chithyola-Banda emphasized that the commitment of the Chinese government to fund the project reflects the strong relations between the two countries.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Long Zhou, assured that China would ensure the project’s successful completion and expressed confidence that the relations between the two countries would continue to grow stronger.
The agreement signing took place on the sidelines of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in Beijing, China.
With the agreement in place, the onus is now on the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to expedite the project’s commencement, working closely with Chinese stakeholders to ensure timely disbursements and the swift start of construction.
As the project progresses, it is expected to bring numerous benefits to Malawi, including improved access to justice and enhanced economic opportunities.
