LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Ministry of Health has confirmed that two people in the country have tested positive for cholera, raising concern about the possible spread of the disease if preventive measures are not strictly followed.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Health, the confirmed cases involve a 42-year-old man from Balaka District and a five-year-old child from Lilongwe District.

The ministry said both patients are receiving medical attention and are being closely monitored by health professionals.

The statement further emphasized that the public must strictly observe all preventive measures to avoid the spread of cholera.

These include drinking safe and treated water, eating well-cooked and hot food, and washing hands thoroughly with soap and clean water after using the toilet and before handling food.

The ministry has assured the nation that it is fully prepared to respond to the disease.

Health authorities have put response teams on alert and are working with district health offices to strengthen surveillance, community awareness, and rapid response systems in affected and surrounding areas.

People have been strongly advised to seek medical care immediately at the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms associated with cholera.

These symptoms include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and general body weakness.

Early treatment, the ministry noted, can save lives and help prevent further transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease that spreads when a person consumes food or water contaminated with bacteria that cause the infection.

The disease can spread rapidly in areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water sources.

The Ministry of Health has therefore called on communities, local leaders, and stakeholders to work together in promoting hygiene, sanitation, and public health awareness to prevent a possible outbreak and protect lives across the country.

Ministry urges citizens to remain calm, vigilant, informed, and supportive of response.
