Egypt is led by Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi who was born 19 November 1954 commonly known as Sisi, he is the sixth and incumbent President of Egypt, in office since June 2014. As chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Sisi ousted President Mohammed Morsi amidst an uprising in 2013, launching a bloody crackdown that left 1,400 dead and 16,000 detained.
Sisi installed an interim government, remained Minister of Defence and became First Deputy Prime Minister. On 26 March 2014 he resigned from the military announcing he would stand as a candidate in the 2014 presidential election.Held between 26 and 28 May, the election included only one opponent, was boycotted by most political parties and the Muslim Brotherhood, and resulted in Sisi winning the presidency with more than 93% of the vote.
Sisi was sworn into office as President of Egypt on 8 June 2014.
This is the Government President Peter Mutharika of Malawi seems to be cozing up to of all all countries in Africa, Egypt.. MANA reports that Egypt Tuesday donated a cheque worth MK20 Million to Malawi government as part of its contribution to the food crisis facing the country.
Speaking during a cheque presentation ceremony in Lilongwe, Egyptian Ambassador to Malawi, Maher El-Adawy said the food crisis facing the country is worrisome and that support from friends is highly required.
El-Adawy said, despite that Egypt is an African country facing almost similar challenges, it felt compelled to assist Malawians in need of food.
“We deemed it necessary to respond to the President’s appeal for food support. This is our second part of the three donations we promised to make to the country,” the Ambassador explained.
He added, “next week we will be making another donation, but this time, it will be in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP)”
The Ambassador also said Egypt is now in the United Nation Security Council as well as in the peace and Security Council of the African Union the positions that qualify her to help countries that are passing through critical situations.
The Ambassador then appealed to other countries to join hands and help Malawi alleviate the hunger situation.
“The MK20 Million is not enough but we have done so to demonstrate to other countries that it is possible to help with the very little resources at our disposal. We therefore expect other countries to come in and assist,” he said.
Minister of Finance, Goodal Gondwe commended the Egyptian Government for the support which he said will save lives of million people.
Gondwe said unlike earlier announced that only 2.7 million people would be affected by hunger, the figures have now risen, a situation he described to be tricky and could not be handled by the Malawi government alone.
“This is the first time in the history of independence, for our country to experience, the dry spell, floods and decrease in maize production, “explained Gondwe.
He added, “We would like to salute the Egyptian Government for the support.”
