Malawi court frees eight anti-judiciary protest leaders

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate on Monday, July 25, 2022 granted bail to eight activists from Humano were arrested for aiding the continuation of Anti-Judiciary protests in the Capital Lilongwe despite a court injunction restraining them to proceed.

However, the eight have been found guilty of disrespecting court proceeding and proposing violence at an assembly.

Anti-judiciary protest leaders out of bail

In court, Magistrate Amran Phiri said the state failed to articulate how the release of the accused persons will interfere with the investigations.

Meanwhile, Phiri has ordered the accused persons to provide one surety of 150, 000 each, K500,000 non cash bond, surrender their travel documents, report to police once every fortnight and seek police consent.

The accused Civil Rights leaders are Kingsly Mpaso, Billy Banda, Phunziro Mvula, Chimwemwe Mphepo, Edward Kampanje, Aubrey Harare, Jonathan Phiri and Victor Nyanyaliwa.

They were arrested on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.
