MWANZA-(MaraviPost)—In Malawi’s boarder and southern district of Mwanza on Tuesday, stealing of 50 kilogram maize and laptop bag landed a 22 year-old man into six and six months jail term.Mwanza Police Station Spokesperson Edwin Kaunda told The Maravi Post Tuesday evening that the court beyond reasonable doubt found Luke Joseph guilty of an offence of house breaking and theft.
Kaunda said that the convict committed the crime on June 29, this year at Masokosa village at around 0900 hours.
He further said that the court heard that Joseph broke into the house of Beatrice Matino and stole a 50kg bag of maize and laptop bag which had clothes in it. Both the bag of maize and a laptop bag were valued at MK29, 000.00.
He added that the convict took advantage of Beatrices absence who during the material time was at Mwanza market selling vegetables.
“Upon the victim’s home arrival from the market, she saw Joseph carrying a bag of maize and the laptop bag outside her house. She therefore rushed into the house to verify as to whether the items the convict carried were hers.
“Beatrice was shocked to learn that her house had been broken into and the said items were missing. Consequently, the victim informed members of the community policing at Masokosa village. The community followed Luke and apprehended him while in possession of a bag of maize and laptop bag.
“The convict was handed over to Mwanza Police. Joseph appeared before Mwanza First Grade Magistrate Court and on July 12, where he pleaded guilty to the charges of housebreaking and theft.
“Its when His worship Ranwell Mangazi proceeded with the six years and six months jail term sentence with hard labor. The sentences will run consecutively,” explains Kaunda.
Luke Joseph hails from Mkwete village Traditional Authority (T.A) Nthache in Mwanza district.
