BLANTYRE (MaraPost)–The Kasungu Magistrate Court has slapped 21 year-old Gift Chirwa with a 13 year jail term with hard labour for raping a 74 year-old woman in the district.
Chirwa, according to court documents, committed the offence last November when he masqueraded as a Nyau dancer soliciting funds from the community.
The court heard that the convict, who was clad in Gulewamkulu attire on the material day, forced to the woman to sleep with him without her consent despite the victim offering him the money he claimed to have come to collect.
According to Police Prosecutor, Thokozani Juziwelo, the convict threatened to kill her if she opted for a refusal.
Juziwelo further told the court that Chirwa came again an hour later to rape the woman once more.
First Grade Magistrate Heinz Kanchere then convicted and sentenced Chirwa to 13 years imprisonment with hard labour.
He said he decided to mete a stiff sentence to deter would-be rapists. The sentence was given on Wednesday.
