MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Prison authorities in Mzuzu have deported about 351 illegal immigrants after serving their sentences at Mzuzu Prison.
The move will help reduce challenges that the facility was facing.
A total of 351 illegal immigrants were convicted and sent to the facility for illegal entry; exceeding the recommended capacity from 450 to over 1000 inmates.
Mzuzu Prison publicist, Macbeth Wasambo said some of the illegal immigrants have been at the prison for two years.
Wasambo added this affected the prison’s food budget.
“The situation also led to congestion in prison cells which made the inmates to be susceptible to airborne diseases,” he said.
The development follows the repatriation of 265 illegal immigrants on Tuesday to their country of origin.
A total of 238 were being kept at Mzuzu and Mzimba prisons while 27 were at Maula prison in Lilongwe.
