Salima, July 23, 2015: Authorities have challenged District Information Officers (DIOs) to improve quality governance systems in Malawi through effective research, analysis and reporting of governance malpractices and human rights abuses at all levels.
Deputy Program Manager responsible for the UNDP funded Democracy Consolidation Program Grace Verela made the call Tuesday morning in Salima during official opening of a two day orientation workshop for DIOS.
Verela underscored the crucial role information officers play in promoting transparency and accountability, the rule of law and contributing towards the fight against poverty.
“Improve the quality of governance through effective research, analysis and reporting of good governance malpractices and human rights abuses at all levels of the Malawian society for redress by relevant institutions,” she said.
Verela was optimistic that the knowledge gained during the workshop will help information officers effectively report on issues that could impact change in the society.
“It is my sincere hope that the training will provide us with an opportunity to search for workable solutions to the promotion of good governance and human rights in the country. Be proactive and work as change agents in the promotion of good governance, human rights and improvement of public service delivery,” advised Verela.
In her remarks, Deputy Director of Information responsible for Press and Publications Diana Phiri urged information officers to not only concentrate on politics, but also governance related issues.
“Politicians should not take advantage of the people’s ignorance denying them their right to development. Make people be able to demand their rights to development. Write much of human rights issues,” concluded Phiri.
