MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Political parties in the country have lashed at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for hosting an international electoral conference amid electoral controversy.
Two major political parties in the country, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM have indicated that what MEC intends to do is a clear show of immaturity and insensitivity.
In a statement signed by MEC Chairperson, Dr Jane Ansah, the electral organisation will host the conference where 16 delegates from SADC member states will attend to the Annual General Conference of the Electoral Commissions for SADC Countries will run from 22 to 27 September in Blantyre.
However, MCP Spokesperson, Reverend Morris Munthali has described the decision by MEC as an insensitive one.
“We can only say that Malawi Electral Commission is very very insensitive. They cannot even know what is happening in the country and why Malawians are angry. This smacks of an organisation that cannot run the affairs of the country,” Reverend Munthali said.
Concurring with Munthali is UTM Mouthpiece, Dr Joseph Chidanti Malunga, who said: “I think it is common sense that the majority of people in the country questions the credibility of this institution that manages the elections in the country. Most of the people are not happy. “
MEC, however, insists that it can host the conference since the court in the country has not yet determined its wrongdoing.
Since the 21 May tripartite elections, MEC has been accused of mismanagement of the results of the polls; with HRDC demanding an immediate resignation of MEC Chairperson, Dr Jane Ansah.
UTM and MCP are challenging the results of the polls in court; suggesting a nullification of the same.
