Malawi electoral body set voter registration’ second phase April 27

Jane Ansah: MEC chairperson

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has announced dates for the second phase of voter registration exercise ahead of July 2, 2020 fresh presidential election in the country.

In a press release issued on 23 March, 2020, that has been signed by Mec’s Chief Elections Officer, Sam Alufandika, the Commission has said the second phase of the exercise will run from Monday 27 April to 10 May, 2020 and it will cover the councils of Rumphi, Likoma, Dowa, Lilongwe District, Lilongwe City, Luchenza Municipality, Phalombe, Mulanje and Thyolo.

The Commission has further said, being aware of the fact that the first phase of the registration ended prematurely, it will revisit the councils covered after the last phases of the exercise to ensure that all registration centres have run for a minimum statutory period of 14 days.

The Commission has also reminded the general public that this registration is for those who have reached 18 years of age and who did not register during the 2019 tripartite elections or during the three subsequent by elections or those who will be turning the voting age of18 years by 11 June this year.

For those who already registered, in 2019, Mec says this time they do not have to register again since the Commission already has their bio-data and a date will be announced for them to verify their details.

The current voter registration is part of preparation for the fresh presidential election which Mec will conduct on 2 July this year; following the Constitutional Court’s annulment of the last year’s polls on 3 February, 2020 due to widespread, systematic and grave irregularities of the elections.
