Malawi Film Festival dangles MK21m for 3rd edition

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Film Festival is set to host its third edition from November 29-30, 2024, at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe, with the event budget pegged at MK 21 million.

Festival Coordinator, Cilimoni Kuipa, announced this during a media briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday, September 3.

He stated that this year’s festival promises to be an exciting celebration of both local and international filmmaking, featuring a range of activities and events.

Kuipa highlighted the success of previous editions, which showcased over 25 local and international films, attracted more than 300 attendees, and provided training to over 150 emerging filmmakers in various skills.

“We are thrilled to continue promoting the growth of the film industry in Malawi through a diverse screening program that includes local and international feature films, short films, and documentaries,” Kuipa said.

He expressed gratitude to sponsors like Old Mutual, Multichoice, and HDPlus for their support in making the event possible.

Kuipa also urged Vice President Micheal Usi to lend his support, given his involvement in the industry.

The festival organizers are calling on corporate organizations, government departments, development agencies, NGOs, and individuals to contribute financially to ensure the festival’s success.

The theme for this year’s festival is “Embracing Malawian Culture through Films.”

The Malawi Film industry has struggled over the years to create a platform aimed at fostering development of the film industry in Malawi and providing a platform for local talent to shine.
