Lilongwe, May 13: All Retired Civil Servants can rest be assured of getting their outstanding gratuities, pensions and broken periods after Government made a pledge to pay them off before the end 2014/15 financial year.
Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Dr. Goodall Gondwe expressed Governments’ commitment to have all outstanding arrears cleared off by the end of this fiscal year in Parliament of Tuesday afternoon.
He was reacting to a plea from Chitipa Wenya legislator Godfrey Munkhondya who asked his ministry to consider paying off all retired civil servants who have been waiting for their dues for so long in the process causing miseries to the officers concerned.
In his response the Finance Minister lamented on the current status but he informed the House that there is a special programme which is currently running to address the problem and that come the end of this financial year, all retirees will be paid off.
“When we came into government we did put in place a special programme to ensure that all these arrears are paid by June this year. The arrears are monthly pensions what they call broken periods as well as gratuities and certainly we are doing something about that.
“I would like to stress it here that come June those who will still be owed by the government should come to us so that we can actually clear all those arrears,” said the Minister who failed short of disclosing the actual amount that government currently owes retired civil servants.
