The Malawi Football Association (FAM) has fired its coach and assistant Young Chimodzi and Jack Chamangwana following the painfull loss against Zimbabwe on Saturday in the African Nations qualifier game held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. The Malawi Flames lost to a team that was cash strapped and only travelled by bus the day before.
The 2-1 loss that most commentators have said exposed the technical naivety of the coaching panel left most fans in disbelief and angry leading to calls for the dismisall of the coaches.
Below in full the full press release from FAM on the two coaches dismisall.
At its Emergency Executive Committee meeting held on 14th June 2015 at the Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has resolved to recommend to Malawi Government not to renew the contracts of employment of the current Malawi national football team’s Head Coach and His Assistant which are due for expiry on 31st July 2015.
FAM would like to note that it has lost confidence in the coaches due to poor performance of the Malawi national football team generally during their term of engagement culminating into the recent loss to the Zimbabwe national football team.
Since assuming responsibility in March 2014 the coaches have been in charge of 23 matches of which they won six, drew five and lost 12 representing a 23 percent wining rate.
In view of the above, FAM will upon consultation with Malawi Government, advertise for the position of the Malawi national football team Head Coach as soon as possible. It is expected that the new coach will be appointed by the 1st August 2015. FAM will cast its net wider both locally and internationally in search for a new coach.
In order to manage the transition and ensure smooth handover, FAM has:-
a.Advised the Head Coach and his assistant to immediately proceed on leave pending the expiry of their contracts on 31st July 2015.
b.Appointed Mr. Ernest Mtawali as a caretaker coach for the Malawi national football team during the transition. He will immediately assume responsibility of the Flames in preparation for the friendly match against Uganda during the country’s Independence Day Celebrations.
FAM would like to express its gratitude and thanks to Malawi Government for fully supporting the Malawi national football team’s for the 2017 edition of AFCON qualifying matches. We would like also to thank the general public for turning up in large numbers during the recent Malawi vs. Zimbabwe match. FAM would like to express its disappointment with the result against Zimbabwe in a match which it feels the Flames were in a better position to win and accordingly apologize to the nation for the painful loss.
