MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-For over a month now since some secondary schools in the country were closed down, government is yet to decide when such institutions will be reopened.
When asked to comment on the same, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), Lindiwe Chide, said the government is still in liason with authorities of the affected schools to see how to best assess the situation.
However, an education activist, Dr Steve Shara, who works with African Institute for Development Policy, has appealed to the Government to respond to the situation speedily.
“The curriculum is structured in such a way that every day at school matters. So, it’s quite particularly tricky for the Form Fours who are sitting for their exams next year. So, it is very important for Government to come in quickly. Of course, students broke the law. So, let the culprits face the consequences as learning continues,” said Shara.
For only a month, five secondary schools in the country have been closed down indefinitely after students held riots and damaged property at the same.
At first it was Blantyre Secondary School on 8 October, then Thyolo Secondary School. On 17th of the same month, Lunzu Secondary School followed suit. Then St. Michaels Girls Secondary School in Mangochi was also closed down.
And last week, Rumphi Secondary School was also closed down and students were sent packing after they held protests against the Head teacher of the school. They damaged teachers’ houses, classroom blocks and laboratories among other property.
Of all the closed schools, it is only Blantyre Secondary School that has been reopened this week.
