MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi government is yet to fulfill its promises of constructing houses for the needy people in its decent and affordable houses subsidy programme in the country.
In Mzimba alone, over 165 thousand people have not yet had their houses constructed and handed over to them and they are just waiting for the government to start constructing the houses.
According to acting District Commissioner for Mmbelwa District Council, Tamara Nyirongo, the number is just an estimation of beneficiaries from all the constituencies in the district.
However, Director of Housing in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Eunice Chipangula, has put it that the delay is as a result of having more people on loan than those who need complete help.
“We had a very large number of such type of people, so we are doing everything to accomplish the project before this year ends,” Chipangula said.
Since 2014, government has been constructing houses for about 975 thousand vulnerable people such as the elderly, widows and persons with albinism with an aim of improving their living standards.
