
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Homeland Security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma on Thursday pledged that to donate his March salary to Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors in Chilobwe, Blantyre.
According to government perks ministers’ basic salary is pegged at MK1,856,000 while Deputy minister gets MK1,542,800 with motor vehicle loan of MK50 million and general purpose advance of pay.
Zikhale Ng’oma who once lived in Zingwangwa donated the money to the survivors through group village head Chilobwe during a brief presentation ceremony held at Naotcha Primary School where scores of survivors have encamped.
The minister said he decided to donate the salary as a sign of appreciation to the traditional leader and the community for their efforts in rescuing survivors and burying those who died in the disaster.
Zikhale Ng’oma also donated K200 000 to grave diggers who prepared 28 graves in a space of three days.
He also made a K100 000 donation to group village head Chilobwe for his personal use.
Village head Chilobwe lauded the minister for the timely support towards affected communities.
Cyclone Freddy has killed more than 250 people while displacing over 18, 000 households in the southern region’s districts.
