Malawi Info Minister Kazako vows to restructure MBC

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Information Gospel Kazako has disclosed that there are plans to restructure the operations of the state broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) in a drive to enable to serve all Malawians again.

Speaking on Wednesday when he conducted a familiarisation tour at the broadcaster’s headquarters in Blantyre, Kazako said time has come for the tax payers funded media house to serve the interests of all Malawians and not those of the ruling party.

“Look, you are guilty of many many offences. When Malawians expected you to fight hunger, you were hunger yourselves; when Malawians expected you to give them messages on how we can fight Covid-19, which is a big problem amongst us, you were Covid-19 yourselves; when Malawians expected you to bring them messages that would bring unity amongst them, you were a disuniting factor yourselves,” lamented Kazako.

Kazako also hinted that the restructuring process will be based on merit as it is a key process the current government is championing across the board; and not necessarily a witch hunting one, so that Malawians of right qualifications can be employed in the civil service.

In his remarks, Director General of MBC, Aubrey Sumbuleta, said as professionals his team will sit down to perfect their services.

“There are areas that we have done well and there areas that we have not done well and that’s a point of reflection that Honourable Minister referred to and certainly as professionals, we will be going back to the drawing board to look at where we did well and where we didn’t do well and not to repeat the same mistakes that we have done,” Sumbuleta said.

Under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government, MBC fell out of touch with most Malawians as it was deemed to serve the DPP political masters at the expense of its financiers, who are Malawians, the taxpayers themselves.
