Minister of labour and Manpower Development, Henry Mussa says government is launching Community Technical Colleges next week Friday at Ngala in Kalonga District. The initiative is part of government strategy and priority area to champion job creation and skills development in Malawi; this was said on Thursday in Lilongwe
Mussa urged government and other stakeholders within the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) wants to invest in education especially rural areas in order to hasten economic growth. “Government embark on the initiative to open Community Technical Colleges in different parts of the country considering that a skilled labour force can contribute to economic growth and improve the living standards of the nation hence reducing poverty” said Mussa.
He added that the Community Technical Colleges across the country will start with five courses (Bricklaying, Carpentry, Plumbing, Wilding and Trade) for socio-economic of the country and poverty reduction.
The project will reduce unemployment rate since many youth will have skills in job creation for their livelihoods.
Principal Secretory for Ministry of labour Patrick Kabambe, further said government is expected to provide several opportunities to students who are to graduate. “For instance government has allocated window capital startup for graduates who will need to start a business through ministry of finance in order to develop the industry” commented Kabambe.
In fact the responsibility of improving the well-being of the masses rests in all of us. Therefore, he urged the stakeholders to seize the opportunity and engage their duties in improving Malawi education standards to the high heights.
The project is to be introduced in nine districts namely; Lilongwe, Kalonga, Chiradzulu, Dowa-Mponela, Mzimba and four others and is being supervised by Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) a regulatory body that was established in 1999 by an Act of Parliament with the mandate to direct sustainable acquisition of internationally competitive and recognizable technical, entrepreneurial and vocational skills by the Malawians workforce
