Malawi leader Chakwera cut short his official visit in Tanzania

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera is expected back home this afternoon as the president has cut short his trip to Tanzania due to other undisclosed engagements, State House has confirmed.

Chakwera left Malawi for Tanzania on Wednesday for a three-day state visit and was expected back home on Friday.

Confirming the sudden change of programme, Presidential Press Secretary Brian Banda has told local media that Chakwera will arrive at Kamuzu International Airport this afternoon.

“Yes, the President is coming back today at 4:30 pm. Initially, it was supposed to be a three-day visit but the President has other engagements back home” said Banda.

The President chartered Malawian Airlines – ET – 20 on his trip to Tanzania which is scheduled to leave for Johannesburg tomorrow at 09:20 am.

The President chartered the same plane on his state visits to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

In Tanzania Chakwera was seen without mask during all meetings with the host president John Magufuli and his entourage and social distance was also not observed as preventive measure against the novel Coronavirus which has ravaged the whole world economically and socially.

It is yet to be known whether Chakwera’s decision to cut short the trip is one way of reducing chances of contracting the virus in Tanzania where people do not Covid-19 preventive measures under the directive of its president Magufuli.
