Malawi on a downward slide as a tourist attraction

The rank is a biannual event which ranks how favourable a country is for tourists.

Reads the report in part, “The set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the travel and tourism sector, which in turn, contributes to the development and competitiveness of a country,”

Malawi has gone down five places in the last three reports since 2011 and two places down compared to the 2013 report which ranked Malawi at position 124.
Xenophobic South Africa has topped Africa’s chart and ranked 48 on the world list while Spain has taken the top spot with European countries dominating the top 10 countries with 6 countries.

The ranking is based on a number of factors including business environment, safety and security, health and hygiene, human resources and labour market, ICT readiness, prioritization of travel and tourism and price competitiveness among others.

The Minister of Tourism, Kondwani Nankhumwa was quoted in the media on what needs to be done to make Malawi more attractive for tourists.

“The country needs policies on land, energy, transport, natural resources, taxation and financing among others that are tourism-aware or tourism responsive, hence the need for tourism mainstreaming.”
