Learners set Karonga District Commissioner’s office ablaze

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-As the nation-wide teachers sit in and demonstrations refuse to die, learners in Karonga have set on fire an office which the District Commissioner was using.

According to reports, primary and secondary school learners in the district this morning took to the streets in protest against failure by their teachers to teach them.

While demonstrating, the learners marched to Karonga District Council offices where they chanted and pelted stones at officers.

As if that was not ugly enough, later in the afternoon another group learners flocked to the said offices where they targeted the office of the District Commissioner, which they later set on fire.

Efforts to save the office proved a far-fetched dream as the Police and Escom officials arrived at the office when the fire had already gained more ground, damaging property worth millions of Kwacha in the process.

This was a temporary office which the DC was using as the main office was also torched down by demonstrators a couple of weeks earlier.

This is a third day since teachers in the country started to hold a sit-in and demonstrations, aimed at forcing the government to pay 5, 000 of them who missed their salaries last December.

However, learners have joined the demonstrations where they are chanting ridiculous songs towards the district council offices.

On Wednesday, the situation got worse when some of the learners in Dowa and Mzuzu City engaged in running battles with the Police; forcing the former to use teargas to contain the situation.
