BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Parliament of Malawi has officially been dissolved ahead of the 2025 Tripartite Elections, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The announcement is contained in a press statement dated July 23,2025 and signed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara.
According to Hara, the dissolution of the 2019–2025 Parliament is in line with Section 67(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, which mandates that the National Assembly shall stand dissolved on the 23rd of July in an election year.
Says Hara in the statement:”This paves the way for the upcoming General Election, scheduled to take place on 16th September 2025.
“With the dissolution, all parliamentary operations involving Honourable Members of Parliament—such as legislation, oversight, and representation—have officially ceased.”
The speaker emphasizes that Members of Parliament no longer hold their offices until the new Assembly is constituted following the elections.
She further outlines a provision from Section 67(4) of the Constitution, which allows for the possibility of recalling the dissolved Assembly under specific circumstances.
“If a constitutional crisis or emergency arises between the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of the General Election, the President may reconvene the National Assembly, but only for that singular purpose.
“Malawians are advised that a new Parliament will be formed after the Tripartite Elections on 16th September 2025,” adds Hara in the statement.
This marks a significant step in the country’s democratic process as the nation prepares for elections that will determine its next legislature.
