The Malawi Police in the central district of Kasungu are keeping in custody a 25 year-old woman for allegedly stealing a one -month-old baby girl.
Edna Nzingwitsa, Kasungu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer confirmed the development to The Maravi Post in an interview on Friday, August 7, 2015 who identified the suspect as Loveness Ngulube who confessed that she committed the offense because had no child.
Nzingwitsa told The Maravi Post that Ngulube stole the baby on Wednesday, August 5 at noon at place near Kasungu National Bank branch when she was in a company baby’s mother, Ndaziwona Phiri while coming from the hospital.
“The suspect and the owner of the baby were together coming from Kasungu District Hospital then Ngulube asked the mother to assist carrying the baby. However, upon reaching the National Bank, the suspect disappeared with the baby to a nearby market.
“The incident was reported to police who arrested Ngulube on the following day, Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Katchere Village near Kasungu Secondary School.
The baby was in a good health though advised the mother to go for medical check-up to verify her health condition. During interrogation, the suspect confessed she pilfered the baby out of desperation to have a kid as she got married in 2013”, said Nzingwitsa.
Ngulube hails from Edingeni Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mmbelwa in Mzimba district and will answer the charge of stealing a child contrary to Section 167 of the penal code whose maximum sentence is seven years in jail if convicted.
