KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has bemoaned the continued serge in cases of violence against the elderly people over alleged witchcraft accusation’s in Karonga.

MPS Deputy Inspector General (IG) John Nyondo expressed the concern on Sunday during the police’s peace and safety awareness campaign’s at Chinsogholo Primary School ground in Lupembe in the district an area where five people were gruesomely murdered over alleged witchcraft accusations in December.

The deputy IG, said it was an offence to accuse someone of being a witch under the witchcraft Act hence warned the long arm of the law will prosecute anyone found involved in the vice.

He noted; any person has the potential to grow old at some point of their lives thus it was wrong to accuse the elderly of being witches.

“As the police we deplore all forms of violence being perpetrated on our elderly because if there are misunderstandings lets take them to our traditional leaders to resolve them instead of resulting to violence to solve the problems,” Nyondo said.

The IG therefore called upon Malawians to join hands with the police to eradicate such forms of violence in the communities.

In his remarks Senior Chief Mwala’ngombe who was representing Paramount Chief Kyungu, expressed gratitude to the police for organizing the awareness campaign saying if such criminal acts are left unchecked the country’s future will be doomed.

“It’s very unfortunate that many of our young people are the ones behind these evil acts that are being perpetrated in our communities hence I appeal to them to stop such acts as they are posing a huge security threat to the country and its social economic development,” articulated a visually emotional Senior Chief Mwela’ngombe.

The Malawi Police Band and a football match involving Super League side Blue Eagles and Lupembe select spiced up the event where the home side claimed a surprise 1-0 victory over their illustrious opponent.
