LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Services (MPS) have removed several roadblocks across the country.
The Maravi Post spot check in the capital Lilongwe on Friday, April 7, 2023, revealed that most roadblocks in the city have been dismantled.
Some of dismantled roadblocks in the capital Lilongwe including MDI along Likuni-Chigwirizano, Bunda turn off and among others.
The move after barely a few days Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma acknowledged the unnecessary roadblocks, which some police officers were using as a “cash cow” to collect bribes from motorists.
The ministry plans to introduce an electronic revenue collection system to eliminate cash transactions.
Similar removals were made in 2020 to mobilize officers for the election, but the latest move aims to address corruption concerns.
Zikhale Ng’oma revealed in Parliament this week that his ministry is planning to remove some roadblocks in the country.
The minister was responding to a complaint from a Parliamentarian who worried that there are many ‘unnecessary’ roadblocks within the Blantyre-Lilongwe road.
In responding, the minister stated that his ministry has observed that the roadblocks were a ‘cash cow’ for some police officers who used them to illegally collect money from motorists.
Further the minister stated that his ministry was introducing an automatic revenue collecting system that will see motorists paying fines electronically to the ministry than using cash.
In 2020 Malawi Police Service also removed some roadblocks in the country, they argued that they were mobilizing officers to be providing security at polling centres during the fresh elections.
