BLANTYRE (Maravipost)–Police in Malawi’s commercial capital, Blantyre have once again arrested their law enforcer Ken Kamwambi, who picked late last year in connection with the K412 million robbery at Standard Bank Mzuzu, for allegedly taking part in the recent killing of Assistant Superintendent Victor Midiyani in Limbe.
The number of suspects nabbed in connection to the murder of Midiyani has reached six and two others are on the run, according to Southern Region spokesperson, Nicolas Gondwa.
“A police vehicle was passing by Limbe Tavern and upon seeing the vehicle, one bystander fled climbing a fence.
“Police officers stopped the vehicle and ran after the suspect. He was caught and told law enforces that he was not alone as his counterparts who included Kamwambi were in the tavern,” said Gondwa.
Kamwambi was first arrested in September 2014 in relation to the K412 million bank robbery in Mzuzu.
After being released on bail, Kamwambi was rearrested in December for alleged links to another robbery that took place on December at a businessperson’s house in the commercial capital.
The other suspects are 34 year-old Alick Juma from Biwi Township in Lilongwe, Yusuf Wachala, aged 35, from Area 23 in Lilongwe, 34 year-old Gilbert Jonathan Zinanga from Naperi in Blantyre and 40 year-old Lewis Julius, who comes from Area 23 in Lilongwe.
Meanwhile, more than 30 police officers have arrested for the involvement in organized crimes with some resulting in deaths of some innocent law enforcers.
This increased involvement of law enforcers in organised, according to the National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo, is denting the image of the country’s security agency.
While admitting it was difficult to completely deal with the vice, Manjolo claimed they will continue to do everything necessary to safeguard Malawi Police Service’s integrity.
